Setup - Deployment Overview

The RMS Field Gateway v1.0 is delivered pre-imaged and pre-configured.

The operating system, Direwolf, and LinBPQ are installed and aligned for stable VHF/UHF RMS Gateway operation.

Deployment consists primarily of entering your station-specific information and connecting the unit to your radio and network.

Most installations are completed in approximately 30 minutes.

What You Will Configure

During setup, you will enter:

  • Sysop callsign and credentials

  • RMS Gateway registration details

  • Station location information

  • Audio interface selection

  • Network connection method

A step-by-step Setup & Operations Manual guides this process clearly.

No command-line experience is required for normal deployment.

Hardware Requirements

To place the gateway into service, you will need:

  • VHF or UHF FM transceiver (fixed frequency recommended)

  • USB audio interface (e.g., DigiRig, DigiRig Lite, Signalink)

  • PTT interface or VOX configuration

  • Internet connection (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or LTE hotspot)

  • Regulated 5V power supply or power bank

The gateway operates headless — no monitor, keyboard, or mouse required.

Network Connectivity

The unit supports:

  • Ethernet connection

  • Wi-Fi connection

  • LTE hotspot operation

If internet connectivity is interrupted, the gateway will:

  • Attempt automatic reconnection

  • Enter predictable relay mode

  • Spool messages locally

  • Forward automatically once connectivity returns

No manual recovery is required.

Power & Recovery Behavior

The RMS Field Gateway is engineered for unattended operation.

If power is lost:

  • The system restarts automatically

  • Services start in proper sequence

  • Gateway operation resumes without manual login

Watchdog monitoring and controlled restart logic are built in.

Designed for VHF/UHF RMS Gateway Operation

This platform is engineered and validated specifically for:

  • VHF / UHF FM packet

  • 1200 baud AFSK

  • Fixed-frequency RMS Gateway deployment

While the underlying software supports additional modes and bands, this appliance is configured and supported as a VHF/UHF RMS Gateway platform.

Stability Architecture

The following are pre-configured:

  • Automatic service startup with dependency handling

  • Port binding and sequencing control

  • Log rotation and disk usage management

  • High-endurance storage media

  • Unique machine-ID provisioning

  • Unique SSH Keys

  • Controlled update environment

The objective is simple:

The gateway stays up.

Documentation Included

Each unit includes a comprehensive Setup & Operations Manual, and includes troubleshooting guidance.

The documentation reflects the actual configuration shipped.

Intended Role

The RMS Field Gateway v1.0 is designed as a dedicated RMS Gateway appliance.

It is not intended as:

  • A general-purpose Linux computer

  • A development workstation

  • An experimental digital mode platform

It is built for one role — reliable RMS Gateway service.
